Lt. Cdr. Philip Van Horn Weems
In 1919, Lt. Cdr. Weems was on the deck of a ship in the middle of the Atlantic. He was part of a small flotilla of ships that were used as beacons for the flight of three small aircraft that were attempting the first trans-Atlantic flight. As he gazed up at them, he thought that there must be a better way for aircraft to navigate. It was then that he realized that navigation was his destiny; he went on to transform the field with his ideas, writings, and inventions of navigational instruments.
In the 1920’s, he taught navigation at the Naval Academy and later went on to establish his own school in Annapolis, Chesapeake Bay, to teach The Weems System of Navigation. Before attempting his trans-Atlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh studied with Weems. Admiral Byrd came to Weems for instruction before setting out for the North Pole.
